JAVA CITY™ ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF NEW LIMITED EDITION COFFEE
Java City to begin selling 'Santa Anita de Costa Rica' in all of its company owned and licensed café locations
SACRAMENTO, CA., July 07, 2009 - Java City, a specialty coffee roaster and retailer of fine hand roasted coffees, announces the availability of 'Santa Anita de Costa Rica', their newest limited edition coffee. 'Santa Anita de Costa Rica', which is Rainforest Alliance certified, will be marketed and sold under Eco-Grounds®, Java City's environmentally and socially responsible coffee brand.
Java City began a partnership with Hacienda Santa Anita, a Rainforest Alliance certified family owned farm located in the Naranjo region of Costa Rica in the fall of 2008. While on his yearly trip to Costa Rica, Shawn Hamilton, Java City's Master Roaster, received an invitation to tour Santa Anita's operation. "We were working with some of our farmers over there when we decided to check out Santa Anita's operation before we left," says Shawn. What he found was an efficient operation producing incredibly high quality coffee: "Many farms are good producers, but do so at the expense of quality. Not only was I impressed with Santa Anita's meticulous operation and superb efficiency, I was equally impressed with the quality of the coffee that was being produced." While it's logical to conclude that an operation dedicated to cleanliness and operational efficiency will produce high quality, Shawn says, "That's not always the case - believe it or not, many coffee producers are operationally sound in order to maintain production efficiency, not to produce quality coffee beans."
Although quality is of critical importance, Java City ultimately decided to partner with Santa Anita for their commitment to using sustainable growing and farming practices. Many coffee farms depulp, or remove, the red, cherry-like skins from the coffee bean with a process that uses large amounts of water. The farmers at Santa Anita, however, depulp and convert the coffee beans through a process called 'aquapulp', which uses 95% less water than traditional water processing methods and greatly reduces waterway pollution.
"We have an opportunity to provide our consumers with an amazingly balanced and flavorful coffee that was harvested with a focus on preserving the natural environment," states Brett Zugnoni, Java City's Director of Marketing.
'Santa Anita de Costa Rica' will be available for sale via Java City's internet store and in all company owned and licensed café locations through August 31, 2009.
